The Downs CEP Whole School Commitment to Young Carers

The whole school is committed to meeting the needs of young carers so that they can attend and enjoy school in the same way as other pupils/students and achieve their potential.

The school has a designated Young Carers’ School Lead with responsibility for young carers and their families. Pupils and families will be made aware of the identity of this lead and how to contact them to access support.

We are now running a Key Stage 1 Young Carers Group where we will be meeting up on a Friday afternoon and playing games.

The school only shares information with professionals and agencies on a need to know basis in order to support pupils and their families.

The school actively seeks feedback and ideas from young carers and their families to shape and improve support.

The school uses Pupil Premium funding to minimise any barriers to education and learning experienced by eligible young carers.

The school has an effective referral system and strong partnership in place with relevant external agencies, including the school nurse and the local young carers’ service.

Dates for our Meetings 2015-2016

Friday 9th October

(We enjoyed some Autumn sunshine at Fowlmead and had the play equipment to ourselves!)

Friday 6th November

(The weather was rubbish so we had an indoor picnic in the cabin. We talked about our Christmas trip; a fire safety morning at a fire station and then campfire building and hot chocolate making at Northbourne School in the afternoon! There might even be toasted marshmallows!)

Friday 4th December

Friday 8th January

There are now so many YC in our school that we can't possibly fit on the minibus! Instead, we went for our first meeting at Walmer Baptist Church. After eating lunch we played darts, snooker, giant Jenga and table football to name but a few!

Friday 5th February

Thirty Young Carers enjoyed lunch together in the Walmer Baptist Church and then played lots of games; Pastor Seyan had been shopping just for us. There was lots of laughter and great sportsmanship.

Friday 4th March

We all enjoyed the walk in the sunshine down to Walmer Baptist Church. After lunch, we busied ourselves with snooker, darts and loom bands to name but a few activities.
KS1 Young Carers had their first ever meeting. Circle time gave us an opportunity to share and then we had a game of musical statues; the girls were very good at stopping quickly!

Friday 6th May

KS2 Young Carers enjoyed a lovely walk in the sunshine down to the Church. We saw Pastor Seyan on the way down and sent him our get well soon wishes. As it was such a nice day, we had a picnic in the Church gardens and then played inside and outside the hall.

KS1 Young Carers made the most of the sunshine too as we held our meeting in the gazebo. Mr Turner were taught us how and when to phone for an ambulance. After that, we got into two teams and played the 'over / under' ball game; it was great fun!

Friday 10th June

We are going to spend this session with the rest of the school celebrating the Queen's birthday.

         Friday 1st July
