Term 5 in Year 3

Topic Work

This term our topic will be one that the children chose themselves - the Titanic. It is the 100th anniversary of the sailing of the ship this month. We will be looking at the route of the Titanic, the sequence of events of the maiden voyage, what life was like on board in the different classes and why the ship sank. This topic will encompass literacy, history, geography, art, D.T. and music.

Mathematics

During term 5, we will be looking at various aspects of maths including using calculations in word problems, shape and space, data handling and measures.

Literacy

This term, Year 3 will be exploring life on the Titanic through literacy. This will include drama and role play, diary writing, news reporting in a broadcast, poems and story writing.

Science

This term we will be studying sound. This will focus on how a sound is made, the loudness and pitch of sounds and how sound travels through different solids and liquids.

Physical Education

Children will participate in a programme of athletics activities this term. This will focus on improving their running, jumping and throwing skills. We will be also using the Wii Dance programme to develop movement skills. P.E. sessions are scheduled for Monday and Thursday afternoons, although children should have their P.E. kits available every day as this can change at short notice.

Religious Education

During term 5, we will be studying Judaism. We will look in detail at the story of Moses. We will also discuss the Jewish festival of Passover and why it is celebrated. The children will explore the symbolism of the Seder Plate and take part in a Passover meal.

SEAL

Through SEAL this term, we will look at the theme of ‘Relationships’. Children will explore relationships with family, friends and others in society.

Music

In our music lessons this term we will be singing some songs from the time of the Titanic and will look at composing music to reflect emotions at different points during the Titanic voyage.

French

Children will continue to progress through the French programme with Madame Sheik on a Wednesday afternoon.

Library and I.C.T.

I.C.T. and library sessions will also take place on a Wednesday afternoon. Mr Warner will teach I.C.T. and Mrs Ford will manage the library sessions.

We hope that this letter provides you with enough information to be aware of what your child is learning this term. If children have anything that they would like to bring in and show this term related to our topic then this would be very much appreciated and a nice opportunity for children to share any information.
